USE OF OUR CAR FOR YOUR DMV DRIVE TEST
Our process and how it works.
When requesting the use of our car for the DMV Drive Test, we want to be sure that the student is capable of driving safely, exhibiting control of the vehicle and the ability to make good decisions. Students are expected to be prepared to pass the test using DMV Booklet DL 955 Driving Test Criteria, as a reference to the points system during the test.
New Students That Have Not Taken Lessons With Us
STEP 1 - TEST PREP LESSON / STUDENT EVALUATION -
Since we are not familiar with how a new student drives, we will require a Test Prep lesson to decide whether or not the student is capable of driving our car safely. During this lesson, our instructor will also help the student correct any flaws, bring awareness to the points system and help them become a disciplined driver with good driving habits the DMV examiners will expect to see.
STEP 1B - NOTICE FOR THOSE RESERVING A TEST PREPARATION LESSON/EVALUATION AND THE DRIVE TEST APPOINTMENT-
In the event we have reserved both a test prep lesson (where we will evaluate and decide if the student is approved to use our vehicle) and have also reserved the car for the day of their test (use of the car for test pending instructor approval), please understand that we have designated this time slot for the student and it is no longer available for anyone else to fill in that lesson slot. With this disclaimer noted, if a student is not approved for the test at the end of the Test Prep Lesson, we will conduct this designated time as a 2 hour lesson, instead of using the car, to work with the student on improving areas we see are needed for them to sharpen their skillset, understanding the rules of the road and situational awareness. This lesson will be tailored to the student’s specific needs. At the end of the lesson, a plan of action will be given to the student as a guide for them to become successful drivers and best prepared for the DMV Drive Test.
STEP 2 - IF APPROVED - DMV ROAD TEST -
If you have been given the approval to use our car, we can then move on to the day of the test. Students will be picked up ahead of time to warm up prior to the test. The instructor will give reminders and continue to instill discipline on the habits needed and expected by the DMV examiner. Once the warm up is completed, the instructor will assist the student with the check-in process at the DMV. ________________________________________________________________________
Current Students
New drivers that come to us for training may decide that they would like to use our car in the future for the DMV Drive Test. Our instructors work with the new driver to develop skills so that they can then practice successfully with their support system ( I.e. parents, guardians, etc.). The DMV recommends at least 50 hours of practice outside of the lessons taken with a certified instructor. So, in order to qualify for the use of our car for the drive test, current students must take a test prep lesson to show that they have practiced enough with their support system to be ready for the test.
STEP 1 - QUALIFYING THE STUDENT FOR USE OF OUR VEHICLE -
If a student is already enrolled in lessons with our school, his/her instructor will evaluate the student’s progress throughout the lessons to determine eligibility for the use of our car. The instructor may recommend more lessons or just more practice with the student’s support system to gain the experience the DMV examiner will be expecting. A test prep lesson may be required to show the instructor that the student is proficient and ready for the DMV Drive Test.
STEP 2A - DMV ROAD TEST -
If the student has been given the ok to use our car, we can then proceed to the day of the test. Students will be picked up ahead of their test appointment time for a warm up. The instructor will give reminders and continue to instill discipline on the habits needed and expected by the DMV examiner. Once the warm up is completed, the instructor will assist the student with the check-in process at the DMV.
STEP 2B - WHEN A STUDENT IS NOT QUALIFIED TO USE OUR VEHICLE FOR THEIR TEST -
If during the test prep the student does not show proficiency and a drive test appointment was made out of courtesy to the student, then a regular lesson will take place instead of the drive test. Our instructor will proceed to work on making corrections and improvements to the student’s driving. It is pointless for a student to attempt the test if he/she is not exhibiting excellent control of the vehicle, excellent awareness of other road users in the surroundings, nor exhibiting confidence in decision making. The examiner will find a way to NOT give you a license if the student does not meet the previously mentioned criteria.
Rescheduling or Cancelling a Lesson
If a student needs to reschedule or cancel a lesson appointment, please notify customer service with 48+ hours to avoid any rescheduling fees. This allows us to have the potential to fill this lesson appointment.
Late Reschedule / Late Cancellation Policy
Rescheduling or cancelling within 48 hours will incur a $80 rescheduling fee.
No Show / Lost or Misplaced Permit Policy
If a student had a scheduled appointment time and does not show up to the lesson, forgot about the lesson, lost, or misplaced their permit, then it will be deemed a no-show. In the event of a no-show, the instructor will try calling the student and support system to attempt to make contact with them. After multiple attempts of calling or texting, the instructor will wait for up to 15 minutes from the scheduled time. At this point, if we have not received any response, we will assume the student forgot or is not available for the lesson.
To help avoid these situations as much as we can, we have processes in place to help these situations, not come up as often. We try our best to be proactive in finding solutions to these problems. We have documents on hand that may be used to a issue student licenses. A student license allows students to drive with our school only, if they do not have a permit but please understand that there are specific requirements that need to be met when issuing a student license.
Requirements needed to issue a student license:
Proof of age:
-Birth certificate
-Passport
-State Issued Identification
-Photo of the front page of the permit and photograph of page that shows students photo
To be proactive, the best practice would be to have these documents ready in case this were to happen.
To help you understand student 1st's perspective on a no-show and how it affects our business please consider the following. Every appointment slot has a value to us whether it is using an appointment slot for a student who is on a waitlist or that it provides monetary value for our business. When an appointment is missed or a student is not prepared with their permit it will result in a fee reflecting the single lesson price to help make up for any loss profits that otherwise would’ve been caused by the no-show. We do our best to remind our students of their appointments ahead of time and we hope you understand and respect our time as well.

3. A No-Show or Misplaced / Lost Permit will incur a fee that reflects the cost of the single lesson.
